Sunflowers
Grower: McGrath Family Farms
Description: The Sunflower is given the botanical name Helianthus annuus, from the Greek word, “helios” (sun) and “anthos” (flower). Easily recognized for its large flower head, the Sunflower has numerous yellow petals surrounding the dark brown center. The center of the Sunflower is composed of tiny florets, which later become edible seeds. The entire Sunflower is edible including the leaves, stems, seeds and petals. The petals of the Sunflower offer a mild floral taste with bitter notes, while the seeds offer a toasted nutty savor. The Sunflower heart has a very tender texture, that presents an artichoke-like flavor that is also mildly sweet as well as astringent.
